MN Valley National Wildlife Refuge

Grief & Loss / Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge

I spent the months of November & December 2024 hiking the 20+ miles of trails and meandering through the 2,339 acre refuge landscape in search of imagery I connected to the theme of grief and loss. I used a mix of medium and large format black and white film along with digital images to document this unique late Fall and early Winter season in the refuge. This collection of images focusses specifically on the landscape of the Long Meadow Lake Unit of the MN Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington, MN.

The Shack

Up North / Insecurity

I want to say I’m from around here, but in reality I spent my childhood on the road as a military kid. I visited up north occasionally while being dropped off with grandparents or extended families during the Summers. They showed me their identity and how it was connected to up north. I tasted and saw that it was good. Only now, later in life, am I truly re-discovering my “up north.”

Donna Grilley

I can still smell the donuts / My Grandmother

She showed me the wild places of Northern, WI, her love for the flora and fauna and how to bake.
